At 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 4, 2009, the Timberlake Fire Protection District was dispatched to a possible hazardous materials spill in Lake Pend Oreille. Fire Boat 695 responded to the site to find a 20 foot wide by 1,000 foot long collection of organic material including polen, silt, pine cones, branches, and other unknown organic material. From a distance, it looked like a red spill of sludge or liquid. The location was in Scenic Bay, just north of the Navy's barge and south of the shoreline. It contained no hazardous materials and units cleared the scene.
